EC grants Bulgaria EUR 350m for Trakia motorway22.12.2010The European Commission (EC) has given the thumbs-up to the construction of Bulgaria`s Trakia motorway, deciding to grant the country EUR 350 million for its completion, Dnevnik reported on Tuesday.
"This is our Christmas gift to the Bulgarian people," regional development minister Rosen Plevneliev said.
The project approval means the auctions for the motorway were fair and funds were managed competently and responsibly, he added.
The country`s application for Trakia had been widely criticised by politicians, eco warriors and journalists, but the European Commission appreciated the government`s success in cutting the motorway`s price by EUR 100 million, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who is paying a three-day official visit to Lebanion, said.
The saved funds from the motorway will be transferred to the construction of Sofia`s underground network and the Sofia-Kalotina road section.
